Hello, its good to have you here. In this article, I’ll be sharing with you how you can make money as a makeup artist. I have done my research and had the opportunity to speak with big shot makeup artist and I want to share a thing or two with you. These 6 ways to make money as a makeup artist that I want to let you into could actually be articles of their own but I have decided to make this particular article very concise.
Different ways to make Money as a Makeup Artist
1.) Makeup sales
There are levels to it, this is not just talking about retail. Of course you can work at Sephora Mac get your feet wet, make money that way, but you can also sign up for programs like Beauty tap. You can be an online beauty consultant. You can sell products and get commission from them.
2.) Freelance
This is what most people do now, as a freelancer you can work at the salon. If you work at the salon, you might have connections with someone that owns a salon. You go to the salon on these particular days and you have your clients.
3.) TV and Film
This is also another means by which you can earn money. Go to movie sets with your makeup kit and help in beautifying their casts. Try to make connections with movie directors and people in the industry so that you can get such gigs.

4.) Bridal makeup
This is another one you can get into. Most makeup artists are not into bridal and there’s a huge bridal market out there. Bridals are a really good way to make money and once you get in, you are in because once you start talking to event planners, and you have connections with events spaces and DJs as you would network in any other industry, you started networking in the bridal and wedding industry and once people start to get to know you, you are going to get recommended.
Now remember, this is an important date for this person so if they tryst you and they give a recommendation to someone else, it is so easy for you to start booking clients and honestly, I love that you can make so much money in one day and most times you’d be getting paid on the day or sometimes, you’d be paid in full even before the wedding begins.
You can make a chunk of money if you are doing three people plus the bride, it is a no brained. So definitely, look into bridal. If you’re into that sort of makeup, if you have to refine your style, maybe redo your Instagram pages maybe even start a new Instagram or a new website. It’s definitely a lucrative market to be in because honestly, you know that no matter what’s happening in the world, people are still getting money.
5.) Host an online makeup class
If you are looking to get into teaching online, a lot of makeup artists now have been looking to that as an avenue. Having an option where you don’t have to physically be in the room is always a good idea. Having classes would be something that you should be doing. So you have to figure out “what is my audience?” either online or offline, “am I living somewhere where there’s a lot of people who go to certain events that will require my service?”
If there are professionals or young individuals, they would want to try colours and you can offer classes, suit it to whoever your client is and you can set that up online. An easy tool to use is zoom, you can set up your classes even if you want to have a pro account. I believe it’s around $115 and that is a great option for you to be bringing in money and you do not actually have to leave your house.
6.) Create Social Media content
A lot of make up artists do not want to be on camera, they do no want to get into content creation, but I think that a lot of makeup artists want to, it’s just that they do not know where to start.
They’ve spent so much time throughout the years behind the camera to be in front now. You’re like, “wait, someone should fix my hair, check my makeup”, things that they have to think about and worry about and its because it becomes a bit overwhelming. Take charge of yourself in your business as an artist because it can become very stressful.
So I would say, get into content creation because especially as a pro makeup artist it is very lucrative because you are not just an influencer, which is fine. Influencers can be really good at what they do but as a makeup artist, you have a perspective that other people don’t have.
You can speak about a product that youve never used or will never even touch your skin because you can use that on other people. There’s a little bit more knowledge when it comes to application and techniques.
